SYNOPTIC OVERVIEW
A low-pressure area persists over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha–West Bengal coast, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and strengthen over the next two days. Weather conditions across West Bengal remain under its influence, bringing intermittent rainfall and thunderstorm activity.
SOUTH BENGAL CLUSTER
(Includes: Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North & South 24-Parganas, East & West Midnapore, Nadia, Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram)
Weather: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at a few places across the region. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are very likely at one or two places, particularly in North & South 24-Parganas, Howrah, Nadia, and East & West Midnapore.
Impacts: Localized waterlogging, reduced visibility, and risk of lightning strikes, especially in open areas.
Advisory: Avoid travel in low-lying or flooded areas; seek proper shelter during thunderstorms and avoid open or elevated areas.
NORTH BENGAL & SUB-HIMALAYAN REGION
(Includes: Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda)
Weather: Light to moderate rain or thundershowers very likely at most places. Heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is very likely at one or two places, especially in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are also possible at isolated locations.
Impacts: Potential waterlogging, reduced visibility, and risk of landslides in hilly terrains.
Advisory: Avoid travel on landslide-prone routes; stay indoors during storms, and heed local evacuation alerts if issued.
FISHERMEN & COASTAL UPDATE
Sea Conditions: No warnings issued for the West Bengal coast. However, squally weather with surface winds of 35–45 km/h gusting to 55 km/h is likely along and off Odisha coasts and over the North and West Central Bay of Bengal. Seas are forecast to be rough to very rough. Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea from 26th to 28th August.
